STOP CANCER is a non-profit volunteer organization dedicated to
raising funds for cancer research by supporting young research scientists
on the cutting edge of cancer research. The late Dr. Armand Hammer
in Partnership with Sherry Lansing, former Chairman of Paramount Pictures,
founded the group in 1988. After Dr. Hammer’s death in 1990,
the group was reorganized with Sherry Lansing as Chair.
STOP CANCER funds Research Career Development Awards to young research
scientists at the National Cancer Institute -designated UCLA’s
Jonsson, USC’s Norris and City of Hope Comprehensive Cancer
Centers. Each Award is for $150,000. Awardees are selected each year
based on nominations of each Center’s internal peer review
recommendations. In addition to the $150,000 support for each Award,
each Center funds an additional “in kind” like amount
to the Awardees in their respective institution. “In kind” funds
are in the form of space, equipment, secretarial and administrative
support, telephones, laboratory supplies, underlying salary support
and other services and interactions between faculty and Awardees.
Such “in kind” support effectively more than doubles
each Award for a value of over $300,000.
Through this innovative program, STOP CANCER encourages the most
promising scientists who may find the answers to ending the scourge
of cancer.
